My book selection came out of a brief conversation with my buddy, Jenniffer Callaway back in April at Instructor Training when she casually mentioned I should read Make Your Bed: Little Things that Can Change Your Life…and Maybe the World. I had, just prior to our conversation, seen this book mentioned on TV and ordered it that very day. I love inspirational books, and this one was written by Admiral William McRaven (U.S. Navy Retired), so I figured it would be a good read which it absolutely was!
The idea for the book was birthed out of Admiral McRaven’s 2014 commencement speech to the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin. He took inspiration from the university’s slogan, “What starts here changes the world,” and shared 10 principles he learned during his Navy SEAL training that helped him through his training and throughout his life. In the book he talks about how these principles can help change oneself—and the world—for the better.
The book consists of 10 chapters as well as the actual commencement speech he delivered in 2014. Not surprising is Chapter One: Start Your Day with a Task Completed. He shares beautiful stories from his SEAL training as well as stories throughout his naval career and ends chapter 1 by saying, “If you want to change your life and maybe the world—start off by making your bed!”
This book is an easy read packed full of practical advice and encouragement. You will not be disappointed!
