Vocabulary (P 8,11)
Brainstorm vocabulary describing the characteristics of someone who perseveres. Create a visual display of the vocabulary.
Brainstorm names of current movies, books or other media that exemplify perseverance. Have the class select by vote (raised hands or ballot) the top three.
Using the RoundRobin Cooperative Learning Structure, direct each group to choose one of the three examples and identify the demonstrated characteristic/s of perseverance.
Allow time for each group to report.
Cooperative Learning Structure
Divide students into groups of 3-5. Select a recorder to write down the group’s ideas and a reporter to present results to the class.
For a designated time students are to take turns in their teams responding to the topic.
To insure that each student has the opportunity to talk, indicate an article to be used as a "talkingstick". It is to be rotated around the team indicating whose turn it is to share.
Have each reporter share their group's results.
Write a persuasive paragraph supporting your choice of the example of perseverance.
Some of the online videos have brief advertisements attached at the beginning that may be inappropriate for viewing by students and need to be cued before showing.
