The Question Formulation Technique

The Question Formulation Technique

Step 1:
Introduce the Question Focus (Q Focus):
Questions that should be asked about _________________________________________.

Step 2:
Review Rules of creating Questions:

  1. Review the rules for producing questions
  2. Ask as many questions as you can
  3. Change any statements into questions
  4. Write down every question exactly as it is stated
  5. Do not stop to discuss, judge or answer the questions

Produce questions.

Step 3:
Improve Questions

  1. Identify open and closed-ended questions
  2. Change questions:  select one question to change from open to closed-ended and one closed question to open-ended

Example:  Closed to Open
Closed:  Is vanilla your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Open:  What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Step 4:
Prioritize questions
Stating lesson plan criteria or guidelines, ask students to identify 2-3 questions they think are most important.
Group Share out:  Have each group share their rationale for choosing priority questions

Step 5:
Discuss next steps – “What are we going to do with these questions?”

Step 6:
Reflect:   Individual and Group Reflection:
Ask a topic related question for students to reflect upon briefly in writing about what they have learned.  Next, discuss and report as a group.
