Betty Flurry

Betty Flurry became a Great Expectations Coach after many successful years as an elementary teacher. During her tenure in the classroom, Betty shined in many arenas, as evidenced by numerous awards and honors. She holds the distinction of being named Teacher of the Year for Darlington Public Schools, El Reno, Oklahoma, Teacher of the Year for El Reno Public Schools, El Reno, Oklahoma, and Zone 5 Teacher of the Year for the Oklahoma Education Association. She received the National Schools Public Relations Award and the Oklahoma Schools Public Relations Award. She received the Kate Frank Meritorious Award from the Oklahoma Education Association and was twice recognized for outstanding service in the HOSTS (Helping One Student To Succeed) Program at state and national levels. She coached Odyssey of the Mind teams to the national level and has received proclamations from the House of Representatives and Senate for educational endeavors. She was selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Science Association to study at Lewis Research Center and since that time has studied at five NASA centers.

Her strength and dedication are evidenced in her civic contributions as well. She served on El Reno’s Parents As Teachers Committee for a number of years. She was a cast member in El Reno’s Community Theater. She served as president of the El Reno Literacy Council and chairperson for the El Reno United Fund Committee. She has served on various El Reno Chamber of Commerce committees and the Hospital Task Force.

Betty’s distinguished educational career began when she received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from East Central State University in Ada, Oklahoma. She also has a Bachelor of Science degree in Graphoanalysis from the International Graphoanalysis Society in Chicago, Illinois. She has earned a Master of Education (Reading Specialist) from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma and recently completed a second Masters in Administration and is a certified Elementary Principal. She holds professional memberships in the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, OEA/NEA, Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, and Delta Kappa Gamma. Since becoming a Great Expectations Coach, she has had the honor of participating in the Class VIII Principals’ Academy. She has been an adjunct professor at the University of Central Oklahoma.

Currently, Betty travels Oklahoma providing knowledge, support, and insight to teachers and administrators as they implement Great Expectations in their schools and districts. Every day, she touches the lives, minds, and hearts of educators. Her living legacy of inspired contributions and dynamic vision will pave the way for educators to be better prepared to meet the academic and social needs of today’s youth through the use of Great Expectations methodology. Her personal and professional legacy will undoubtedly live on for generations to come.

She and her husband, Richard, have three children and one daughter-in-law. Richard is an elementary principal in the Maple School District.
